College is a time to explore; make new friends, try new experiences, and figure out what you want to do with your life, which can be a lot easier said than done for some students. And if you’re one of the students struggling to pick a major or decide on a career path, you might feel unsure where to start. But that’s where the team at the Westfield State Career Center can help.

First things first, don’t panic. Between all of the studying and socializing, there is a lot to do on campus. College can often mean a big lifestyle change for first-year students and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But remember, thousands of other students are out there just like you and there are plenty of resources at Westfield State for you to turn to for help. Starting with the expert staff at the Career Center.

“Start the process early,” says Junior Delgado, the Career Center Director. And for Westfield State students, that means working with team members to create an individualized plan based on each student’s likes, dislikes, and major. But what if you haven’t decided on a major, either? Don’t worry.

The “What Can I Do With This Major?” section on the Career Center site provides a comprehensive list of programs offered and careers associated with each field. You can find information on the specific area of study and what type of employer would potentially hire you.

Let’s say you want to find out about careers that would be more than “just a job.” Well, there’s a resource just for that, too.

Thanks to an online assessment tool called “Focus 2,” Career Center team members can work with individual students to determine their values, interests, and passions. It’s a great way to take a closer look at who you really are and what speaks to you as a person. Think of it as a “self-identification tool.” It then collects all of that data and determines the best career path for you. It also connects you with information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to share career outlook information like the projected demand for certain specialties, or how crowded a field will be over the next few years. Because what would be the point of directing you towards a career that won’t even be around by the time you graduate?

Check out the Focus 2 and other online assessment tools for yourself.

But that’s not all the Career Center can do for you. As Junior likes to say, “The Career Center is the one office people never think about, but the one office you will need.”

For students interested in hearing first-hand accounts from experts in networking, career development, starting a new business, or just preparing for an interview, there’s the monthly “Professional Speaker Series” webinar. On the first Wednesday of each month, an hour-long segment featuring authors, entrepreneurs and career experts is posted. It allows students and alumni the chance to get real world advice and learn from the best in their field. You can find new and past recordings here.

Remember, just like every other department at Westfield State, the Career Center is here to help you succeed. Get ready for your life after Westfield today by speaking with a team member now. Learn more here.
