There’s a lot to take in between all of the classes, students, and faculty. Lucky for you, we’re breaking down the Westfield Student Experience and giving you a guide to each year. Check out our tips for college freshmen and what to expect during your First Year, below.
Living On Campus - The first time away from home can be a challenge. Adjusting to a life separate from family and close friends is always difficult, but now is the time to expand your horizons. Living in a dorm gives you the chance to break out of your comfort zone and get introduced to literally hundreds of other students all at once. Rooming with a complete stranger might sound scary, but thousands of students have done it before and no matter what, your RA is here to help you work through any difficulties you two might have.

The First Steps - Every student’s experience at Westfield State will be different; however, there are a few things you can count on to be the same. No matter what, every freshmen will attend Convocation, enroll in specific courses and enjoy the book chosen as the First-Year READ.
Your Westfield State experience will truly begin at Convocation. That’s where you and all of the other First-Year students will gather before classes to meet each other, faculty and the President. Your classes are designed specifically for new students and are an opportunity to learn more about campus life, our different programs and the advising centers. Finally, everyone will get a copy of the First-Year READ, a book chosen each year for new students. You’ll get the chance to complete the book and even meet the author. Student leadership plays an active role on Westfield State’s campus and takes on many different tasks. You can run for Student Government or become a Student Ambassador. These are great ways for you to not only make a difference in campus life, but also meet new people and make new friends during your freshman year.
