Westfield State Now Offers Scholarships for Out-of-State Applicants

Posted by Kelly Hart on Oct 25, 2017 10:06:17 AM

Right about now, most high school seniors are doing their homework when it comes to the future. That means deciding which colleges they want to attend and figuring out how they are going to pay for it. But what if the school is out-of-state? This can make some schools harder, or even impossible, to afford. But not for future Westfield State students.

For the first time ever, Westfield State will now grant merit based scholarships worth between $1,000 and $5,000 to first-year out-of-state students. What does that mean exactly? For starters, it means that it just became a lot easier for students outside of Massachusetts to become a Westfield State Owl.

Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, which for high school seniors and juniors means “GPA.” To be considered, a student must have graduated with at least a 3.0 GPA. Once awarded, students must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA and be in good academic standing to retain the scholarship money over the next 8 semesters.

The application process is easy. Once your complete your application to Westfield State, it gets reviewed automatically to see if you qualify for the scholarship. So all you have to do in order to apply is first complete the FAFSA and then apply to Westfield State before the December 1 deadline.

Westfield’s appeal to out-of-state students is easy to see. Literally. Sitting on over 250 acres of land, the Westfield State campus offers some of the most picturesque views in all of New England while still being within driving distance to popular urban hubs like Boston and New York City. Take our virtual tour to see our beautiful campus.

Not to mention there is zero chance of homesickness. Westfield is home to over 70 clubs and organizations on campus ranging from academic and philanthropic to recreational and artistic. Every student has a chance to make new friends, form strong bonds and find “their place” within the student body. We take the saying “home away from home” seriously here.

How to choose the right college

Westfield State also boasts some pretty high accolades, like being named one of the Best Universities-North by US News and World Report for five years in a row. Some of the factors that earned Westfield one of the top spots include retention rate, alumni donations, graduation rate performance, and faculty resources. Since first opening in 1839, Westfield State has always prided itself on being grounded in our founding principles of academic excellence and educating all in a diverse and welcoming community.
