When I am asked how I knew Westfield State was the school for me I explain it like this. When a bride is trying on wedding dresses, there is this feeling of emotion that takes over when she is standing in front of the mirror in that one perfect dress. She knows it is the one she wants to wear on that big day. Westfield was my wedding dress. I remember on my first tour I was walking around with the biggest smile on my face because it just felt like home. I knew it was my place. Instead of being scared I became excited about what the next 4 years would hold and the memories that would come with them. That's how I know I chose the right college for me.
So tip number 1. Pick a school that you can envision yourself at. A school that you can see yourself walking around day to day. A place that you can call home. And once you make that place your home make the best of the time you have there.
Once I got to Westfield I knew that I wanted to keep busy, but more importantly, to make an impact that I would leave behind when I graduated. And it didn’t take me long to find the perfect niche to do so. Within the first few weeks at Westfield I became an active member of the cheerleading team. I enjoyed cheering for our school teams, participating in volunteer work with the cheerleaders, and being a part of a team. Cheerleading was the first place I made friends that I will have way after graduation. I also decided to join another group of students outside of the athletic world my sophomore year, the Student Government Association (SGA). SGA was a place for me to learn things about Westfield and advocate for the other students. It was also another place that provided me with more forever friends and forever memories. Without these two opportunities, my college experience would have been completely different.
Which leads me to tip number 2. Get involved. I know that sounds like a stereotypical response that you have probably heard before but it is something that can really make or break your college experience. Getting involved gives you something more than academics to look forward to every day.
So in short, college is what you make it, so make it amazing!
