State University Intern Incentive Program Helps Finance Student Success

"I would just like to say thank you so much for the stipend from the State University Intern Incentive Program. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, I had the opportunity to intern with our Counseling Center. It was an amazing experience, one in which was challenging and provided great opportunities. Not only did I have a chance to participate in fun events such as "Recess" and my favorite "Fresh Check Day", I had the opportunity to work with the ICE program as well. I learned so much about myself and the field of social work and I couldn't be happier that I had a chance to intern for 16 hours per week at the Counseling Center. Thank you again for this amazing opportunity." Jade Seal

"I am extremely grateful and thankful to have received a stipend through the Intern Incentive Program. This past spring, I participated in an internship with the Make-A-Wish (MAW) Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island as a Development Intern. Throughout the internship I worked closely with the Regional Director of MAW in their West Springfield office, where I was responsible for tracking donations, acknowledging sponsors and assisting in the planning of the chapter's internal fundraising events. My internship experience was amazing and a very unique opportunity. As a Communication Major, the internship allowed me to explore the field of development that I otherwise would have not been exposed to. Throughout my experience I found great passion in event organization, as well as an even deeper love for volunteerism.

This award certainly makes an impact on my collegiate career (even though it may be post-graduation in this specific case). Many students feel the pressure of commuting to internships off campus. In some cases students may have limited options to internships on campus. While I would have loved an internship at Westfield State, I am glad that I had the opportunity to explore new environments and opportunities. This award can certainly free students from the burden of affording to commute to off-campus experiences. It is an incredible program, and I feel very lucky to have been selected to receive this award!" Evelyn Dina, Class of 2016

"I wanted to thank Westfield State for making it possible for me to do an incredible internship under the advising of Professors David Christensen and Taryn Weiss of the Biology Department. The stipend from the State University Intern Incentive Program enabled me to take the course, fix my vehicle when it broke half way, pay for gas for the 2 hour round trips and more. The name of the course was Stream Biology & Restoration. I obtained knowledge on culverts, dams, watersheds, statistical analysis, and deep wood nature, how the geology of the land enables life to inhabit it, and a lot more. I learned about the professor’s electrofishing backpack that would shock the fish, momentarily paralyzing them, just enough to catch and categorize them and then release them back. This research opportunity shed light on improving research relations with different organizations. Westfield is a great epicenter surrounded by many areas to learn about nature especially in the field of hydrology, fish and game. I am from Springfield and moved to the area to be able to focus on my education, create stability, and enjoy the opportunities here. I am a regional planning and biology major." Shanice Raschilla
