4 Things to Know as a New Student

Posted by Kelly Hart on Oct 11, 2017 11:08:00 AM

You’ve made it! You’re officially a college student and your first week of classes is over. Now what? Well, a lot actually. But lucky for you, we’re here to break down a few key things you need to keep in mind about your first year of college.

Learn Your Way Around Campus

New to campus? Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. Westfield State sits on more than 250 acres of land—that’s a lot of ground to cover. However, you can always stop by the Campus Center located in the Ely Library for help. Staff and students there will point you in the right direction or even offer friendly advice for getting around campus fast. You might even want to carry around a map until you get used to walking around the buildings by yourself.

Try planning your route ahead of time with our interactive campus map.

Work It

Now is the time to start building relationships with your professors and academic advisors. Don’t be afraid to reach out for advice or help. These are the people who can help you get where you want to be after graduation. Ask about internships, forming a study group or possibly becoming a teaching aid later on in your college career. Make sure you’ve also studied the syllabus for each course and are comfortable with the class expectations. Think of your syllabus as a guide for the next semester; speak up now before you end up going down the wrong path.

Find Your Club

Now is your chance to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new while meeting new people. There are over 70 clubs and organizations on campus open to new members. That means you can audition for a play with the theater club one week and try out for the Quidditch team the next. There is literally something for everyone at Westfield State. You just have to be open and willing to find your place.

It's Your Time

Finally, here’s the most important thing you need to keep in mind this year: it’s all about you. This is your time to learn more about yourself. To discover who you are and what matters most to you. Give yourself the chance to study hard and play hard and to make the types of memories that will keep you coming back to Westfield State long after you have graduated. We’ll always be happy to have you back!
